“I would urge all optical practices to ensure that they archive and store data off site ….”
September 2018 had been an awful month for Radlett Opticians. Optometrist Kirit Patel explains:
We had two servers maintaining and archiving the images from a number of cameras, scanners and topographers. Due to its large size (2 Tb) the backup was done locally on a separate drive. Unfortunately one of the servers failed totally and within the server the topographer data became corrupt. Unfortunately the backup did not backup the database correctly and we lost topographer data going back 11 years.
Chris Robinson and his Replicate Retina team stepped in and now we have cloud backup for 2 terabytes maintained with true professionalism. Replicate Retina also provides backup of the database and images on a separate drive so that we can be up and running in no time should failure of the server occur again.
It has been a pleasure working with Chris who has been hands on with the transfer process – which took a week as we had to backup data at night and on Sundays without affecting the daily running of the practice.
I would urge all optical practices to ensure that they archive and store data off site with a GDPR compliant firm such as Replicate Retina.
If our experience of lost data and headaches endured subsequently is to go by then I would urge all practices to never make the same mistakes and never to trust your in-house IT guys – who do not realise the importance of backing up databases separately.
